The Ambush Introduce Tony Glavin As Their New Head Coach!

St. Charles, MO – A St. Louis indoor soccer legend is returning to the game. Tony Glavin, one of the legendary members of the original St. Louis Steamers, has been named new Head Coach of the St. Louis Ambush, CEO and General Manager Andrew Haines announced today.

Glavin was a midfielder/forward for the Steamers from 1980 to 1985. He also began his coaching career with the Steamers, serving as Assistant Coach from 1985 to 1987 and Head Coach from 1987 to 1988. He finished his indoor playing career with the Kansas City Comets, where he was Assistant Coach from 1989 to 1990 and player/Assistant Coach from 1990 to 1991. He also served as Head Coach for the Dayton Dynamo in 1990.

In 1994, Tony founded the Tony Glavin Soccer Club in Cottleville. The club started with 11 youth teams in 1994 and has grown to over 30 teams today. In 2005, he was awarded a franchise in the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League (USL PDL). That franchise became the St. Louis Lions and Tony has served as Head Coach since the team’s inception. Glavin also manages the Tony Glavin Soccer Complex, a 19-acre facility with five outdoor and one indoor fields.

Earlier today, Haines announced that the Ambush were parting ways with Head Coach Daryl Doran and Assistant Coach Joe Smugala. Under Doran, the Ambush compiled a 12-34 record. They are 0-6 thus far this season.

Haines praised Glavin’s experience as a player and coach. “Tony knows the indoor game and he’s proven to be excellent at developing young players. I’ve gotten to know him well the past two years and I think he is what this team needs right now to turn things around.” Some of the better known local players that Glavin developed are Steve Trittschuh (Steamers, Ambush, Colorado Rapids, Tampa Bay Terror, Tampa Bay Mutiny, US National Team), Ted Eck (Comets, Storm, Denver Thunder, Ambush, Wichita Wings, Dallas Burn, Dallas Sidekicks, US National Team), Kevin Hundelt (Steamers, Comets, Storm, Ambush), Chris Kenny (Steamers, Comets, Ambush), Jim Kavanaugh (Los Angeles Lazers, Steamers), Lawrence Olum (Austin Aztex, Sporting KC), Tommy Heinemann (Columbus Crew), and Steven Beattie (Toronto FC).

Haines also announced that forward Freddy Moojen will transition into the role of player and Assistant Coach for the remainder of the season. Moojen is in his eighth season of professional indoor soccer and his first with the Ambush.

Glavin will make his Ambush debut as Head Coach when the team travels to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to battle the Rampage this Saturday, December 19 at 7:35 p.m. The next Ambush home game is slated for Sunday, December 27 at 5:35 p.m. when they host the Milwaukee Wave at the Family Arena.
